The focus is on establishing lifestyle practices that bring about the enjoyment of who we all truly are. The “self” often gets overwhelmed with stress and societal messages that keep us from being at our best. EnjoyourSelf creates Authentic Gemstone Jewelry and E-Ma's Natural Body and Hair Care Products to center attention on the self, in order to ‘energize, elevate and educe.’LaKeisha Wolfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14544374447689068247noreply@blogger.comBlogger84125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4919586307347287278.post-55434206329768282612015-04-29T01:28:00.000-04:002015-04-29T02:13:51.968-04:00A Personal and Community Feel for the Product

I'm reflective now as I sit at the horizon of my birth anniversary, looking at how far I've come and pondering at the winding road ahead of me. I have a mental list of more awesome things I want to do or accomplish that continues to grow. But, one thing that remains constant on the list, maintaining top position, is accomplishing the greatest challenge of all: living my life as a free and authentic me! That is why I write...more than anything, its a conversation with myself, helping me to keep it focused, being my own muse. Learning to EnjoyourSelf is what the journey's all about!
Peace!

Such a powerful being- you can feel his passion through the words on the page. Tolle shares how to make the most of life by being present in the moment. Whatever is going on in your life, all around you, to embrace the circumstances as though you have chosen them yourself. He suggests this approach over the idea of putting up a lot of resistance to the "challenges" around you. Your attitude and disposition will surely feel a lot better and solutions, answers, etc will come a lot smoother and generally quicker if you're more open than closed in mind and spirit.

Being open truly takes a lot of courage. Sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I am doing on some days. But I know what I want. Knowing what you want and stepping out into the world with a desire in your heart to capture that dream takes faith and resilience. That's what I practice. It's not always easy, and sometimes scary because you don't know what may be around the next corner, but presence in body, mind and spirit in each step you take will surely make the journey rewarding. But I can testify that its worth it- the lessons, the love, the character-building, the giving and receiving on your path- it can fill you up and provide the joy and peace that each one of us truly desires. Life is about the ability to EnjoyourSelf!

Awesome and inspirational. My jewelry co-op in Ujamaa did a demo there a few weeks back on a Thursday night and had the pleasure of meeting and beading with some other awesome women in Pittsburgh. Learn about how co-ops around the world are helping to change and save women's lives.
I guess you can say so if your physical body is in one place and your mind is somewhere else!
This is the feat I will be attempting this Saturday, December 8th!

E-Ma's Natural Body & Hair Care will be traveling to the Braddock Library along with Authentic Gemstone Jewelry, being sold with other works by member artists of Ujamaa Collective.
She loves sitting in her high chair every morning because she knows its her chair, she can now put the safety clips together on her own, and of course because its time to eat-eat! She insists on eating oatmeal on her own, practicing with her spoon, and when that proves to be too challenging in the moment, her bare hands never fail to feed herself. A precious and natural sense of self-determination it is.

It reminds me that we sometimes can lose this sense as we grow into adulthood. Sure we can feed ourselves with a spoon, but our ability to achieve self-suffiency can fall into someone else's hands or determination. As an entrepreneur, this is a key factor to success. From an African-centered perspective, this is called kujichagulia, self-determination, and extends from the self to the community. It means to define ourselves, name ourselves, and to do for ourselves rather than allowing something or someone else to define you and your reality. Having a good sense of your purpose helps you to do this well. It's my goal to practice kujichagulia everyday and in every moment. And when my daughter is older, she won't be looking around outside of herself and her community for who she is and for what she can do, because she'll hopefully already be walking the path that she has forged through the modeling of her mom and following her instinctive nature. I'm faithfully working to do my part!

Have a great day!

Following each one, I share a reflection of personal insight and finally mention three real objectives I've put into motion. These nine tidbits are my gifts to you for my showing up on my own blog, after nine months offline, on the ground putting it down in some other ways. SO again I'm back. The PRESENT is a GIFT. Here's 9 just for you (and me, of course)!

As I step back and embrace the fact that another year is coming to a close and new, exciting opportunities tease me in a New Year's Day being only a month away- I share these three thoughts, packaged in little folded cookies cracked open to not just provide a tasty snack, but a message to inspire and give food for thought.

1- "Following other's path is like entering a dark room without light."
1A-Translation for me: I must stay on my purposeful path, following my inner wisdom and intuition that keeps me true to who I am.

2-"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten."
2A-Classic message for sure. In addition I take that also to mean encouraging yourself to act courageously, be bold to step forward from the past that binds you, and to practice those things which have proved themselves to be worth it.

3. "Change your thoughts and you change your destiny."
3A-I know that my immediate reality is directly impacted by what I bring to the table in the form of my thinking, my words, and my actions and reactions. Practice meditation and consistent habits that push negative and low vibes out and invite good, abundant energy in through thought (mind), deed (body) and word (spirit).

Reflections from these fortunes and coming off of a 21-day meditation cycle focused on abundance, there are three changes I've been working on and will continue to push forward in 2013:

-Transitioning my business model to a worker's cooperative structure, inviting several women to become employed by the business and own equal shares of the business. An empowering model for everyone involved.
-Continue to develop products to be of the safest standards using the highest quality ingredients available.
-Invest in myself, and make a ritual out of it- personally, professionally, culturally and in other ways.
Don't miss an important day full of workshops and information about the intersection of Reproductive Justice and Environmental Justice. I'm excited to present a workshop on The Cost of Beauty. Looking at our use of Personal Care Products and how they affect our wallets, our bodies and the health of mother Earth. Over all this conference speaks to women of color and nature as the experts in our own healing, advocacy, and sense of style. Sisters, we are the first environment. We really have to make this knowledge personal for ourselves in our everyday lives. Check the info below for more details as a part of Women of Color HERstory month.
I was blessed to be able to take a trip to Negril Jamaica organized by my neighbor...and boy did we enjoy ourselves!
It was a drum and dance circle theme and we met up with like-minded folks from different cities, coming together to share and build. I took my daughter as well, and it seems she enjoyed herself too for the most part. (She cried when I took her in the ocean.) But overall, the experience revitalized me and helped me clear my head for 2012. Like most of you, I have personal goals and business goals I'd like to achieve this year. An older sister I met in Jamaica does poetry therapy for a living...we shared a few pieces with each other and the group during a bonfire and dinner on the beach. She was so encouraging, and reminded me of a practice I used to do but fell off from doing. That is to keep a vision board. Take a big poster and add text and pictures (drawings or magazine cut-outs) of the things you'd like to achieve and do in your life. I recently looked at my old vision board and realized that a lot of stuff on there I had actually accomplished at varying degrees. Visualizing your life is a really good way of meeting your goals, and the vision board helps you to crystalize those things into reality. My new poetry friend also suggested creating a list of 30 things you'd like to do...check each one off as you complete it. So take it out of your mind and put it on paper. Then see yourself walking into it for real! EnjoyourSelf this year...2012 is a time for change. Peace!

EVE stands for Enlightened Voices for the Environment, and is a group of women of color who meet monthly to share and learn ways to live healthier lives by way of food, body and hair care, etc. The group is ran by my good older sister friend LaVerne Baker Hotep. The gift bags are for a holiday celebration the women are having this evening. I hope they enjoy their E-Ma's!

She is a smart and beautiful woman, following in the footsteps of her ancestor Madam CJ Walker and upholding the family legacy. I met with her face to face at Ujamaa Collective Boutique in the Hill District. She did a book signing in our cooperative store. We had a conversation about safe personal care products, entrepreneurship, and the pressure that women, particularly African American women, face when it comes to conforming to beauty standards. We both agreed that education is the key to helping women accept their natural beauty and resist using products that are harming them. Later that night I had the pleasure of speaking on a panel after A'Lelia presented information on her family's ties to Pittsburgh. Good feedback is still coming, although I was a little nervous! Sometimes there's so much to share and so little time!

So as these winds are kicking outside the window, I want to remind you to stock up on your E-Ma's cause the weather can be cruel to your skin and hair. And as the season changes, pay attention to the natural changes in you... Many of us have a desire to be with friends and family, to meet some internal needs that are just shaking us up on the inside...its all a part of the season. Don't ignore these little inklings within you, whatever they are. Take care of yourself this fall and winter, so your flowers will bloom next spring.
Peace!

Its probably the only thing that is promised. However there's something special to be said about the good ol' things that remain the same and can be trusted for their quality and effectiveness. For instance, I have tried a few different brands of diapers on my daughter so far. For the most part, they're all the same with a few exceptions. Overall, I like the natural ones that are kinder to the environment and her skin. But a diaper is still a diaper and soon after she was home she had a rash. This is where I end up coming back to the same old thing- shea butter and other natural oils. Nothing is better at protecting and nourishing my baby's little butt butt than what Mother Nature provides. Her skin overall will get no better treatment than what I can whip together from my stash of goodies in the kitchen and the pantry.

My favorite remedy by far can be used all over the body too, but was very effective at speeding up the healing of the diaper rash and preventing it from coming back. And that was a very thin cream of natural shea butter blended with organic coconut oil and boabab oil. The boabab oil was given to me from a friend of mine who traveled to South Africa. This has been wonderful for Amari! I've even thought of perfecting the blend a bit more and giving samples away to friends to try it out and see the results. The beginnings of redness and irritated skin, inflammation of her epidermal skin layer, would have developed into a worse condition if left untreated. You don't wanna see your infant cry from something that is common, yet very preventable and treatable. And why not have a solution that treats all of your skin well! That's a timeless classic move from a momma. I think I made it in the old school remedy club since my ancestors have been sing these ingredients forever!

Would you be willing to try this new E-Ma blend for your baby?
